AI assistance leads to statistically significant decrease in coding mastery

Insight: Anthropic's own research found that "using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery" while speed gains "didn't reach the threshold of statistical significance." Nielsen frames this as obvious: cognitive effort and getting stuck is important for fostering mastery. The organizational pressure to "deploy AI tools at scale" will deskill workers, as "junior developers may rely on AI to complete tasks as fast as possible at the cost of skill development."
