Design systems entering maturity phase — governance and longevity over adoption¶
Insight: Design systems are entering a different phase where early questions about whether to have a system or what components are needed are largely behind us. The deeper challenges now are ownership, longevity, technical foundations, and how systems hold up under real organizational pressure. Critical unsolved challenges are primarily people, culture, and coordination problems — not technical ones.
Detail: The DSC year-end issues highlight that the most resilient systems are built with foresight, discipline, and understanding of users. Case studies from Airbnb, GOV.UK, BBC, IBM, and Salesforce illustrate that governance, federated models, and sustainability — not component libraries — are where design systems succeed or fail at scale.
