Cursor enters "Third Era" — cloud-based autonomous agents surpass local IDE usage¶
Insight: According to Latent Space, Cursor has entered a "Third Era of Software Development" where cloud-based autonomous agents replace traditional IDE-based coding. Usage data reportedly shows agents surpassing tab autocomplete at Cursor itself. Cursor acquired Graphite and Autotab, with Autotab's computer-use technology repackaged into cloud agents that run in dedicated virtual machines with full desktop access.
Detail: Three pillars of Cursor's cloud agents: (1) models test their own code changes end-to-end before returning PRs, taking ~30 minutes in demos; (2) agents generate demonstration videos of implemented features; (3) remote VNC desktop access allows human review and iteration. Jonas (Autotab co-founder) predicts "by end of year, cloud agent volume will exceed local agent usage by 2x+." The system includes onboarding (cursor.com/onboard) where agents independently install dependencies and configure environments. Cursor's $50B valuation reflects the market's bet on this shift.
